Harbor of Hospitality

Welcome to the biggest, friendliest and most inclusive yacht club on Lake Michigan, bringing together folks from all walks of life. While we have our blue-blazer traditions, no one ever called us stuffy. What you'll find is a more laid-back vibe that invites people to just be themselves, away from the pressures of life in general. We're a busy gathering place year round, unlike typical yacht clubs that go into winter hibernation.

Dues and slip fees are surprisingly affordable, in part because our passionate members help maintain the place. Being a major Great Lakes yacht club, we host an exciting sailing and power boating scene. Yet, a growing segment of members don't even own boats. For them, SSYC is all about fellowship, in the most romantic spot on Milwaukee's lakefront. Smack in the heart of the city's most happening neighborhood.

The Facility

We operate a full-service marina with 230 slips, crane, fuel dock, tender, dry-sail storage and winter storage. (See details.) The grounds exude genteel charm. Downtown Milwaukee's waterfront skyline provides a sweeping vista in the distance. Perfect for socializing and entertaining, our first-floor bar and lounge overlook the south basin anchorage. Dining in the upstairs restaurant features gourmet cuisine and a spectacular view of Lake Michigan. We stay busy all year thanks to regular theme nights and private parties. Come down for any of our regular holiday celebrations, such as the Change of the Watch and the always-sold-out New Year's Eve bash.

Junior Program

Around the country, our junior sailing program is held up as a model. It's open to youth sailors ages 8 to 18. We offer junior membership to all young people interested in learning yachting and navigational skills. The eight-week summer course emphasizes safe boating. Qualified instructors teach all levels of techniques and skills, so any young person can begin a lifetime of nautical enjoyment. (See details.)

Power Fleet

Our gregarious powerboat committee sponsors a variety of social and competitive events. They include many charitable events supporting worthy causes such as Big Brothers and Sisters. And throughout the summer there are well-organized fun cruises to other ports. (See details.)

Sail Fleets

SSYC has a long and distinguished yacht racing tradition. We're known throughout the Great Lakes for our active sail-race program. Our membership includes champion sailors who have won at regional, national and international regattas. We're fortunate to have one of the most professional race committees in the Midwest. Well-run events are the rule. If you want to get into racing as a skipper or crew, choose from several great options. (See details.)

The Queen's Cup® Race

We're home to one of the most coveted trophies in yacht racing, South Shore Yacht Club's signature annual event. Traditionally held at the end of June, this overnight dash across Lake Michigan is a legendary adventure that usually attracts about 200 boats. It's the high point of our racing season, with a three-day party on the front end. On the back end, you'll be greeted warmly by our destination yacht club. The only predictable part of the race is how unpredictable it will be. (See details.)
