Open House a Big Hit

george artkaThe month of February was one of the seven coldest on record, and the frigid weather spilled over into the first week of March. Even so we carry on conducting business as usual and having fun. The Power Boaters' Committee organized a great Valentine's Day dinner. The food prepared by Chef Sam and his staff was fantastic. To finish off the evening, everyone enjoyed music by SWAY.

Many thanks to Sharon Cook for organizing the club's Wednesday night programs. Feb. 18, the guest speaker was Kevin Shafer, executive director of MMSD. He gave an enlightening talk on the health of the Great Lakes. General Manager Pat Nora continues to come up with special food and drink selections. Wednesday wing night continues to be very popular. Please check the website calendar for all the specials our club has to offer to our members.

On Feb. 28 the Membership Committee, headed by Vice Commodore Ken Dziubek, held an open house for prospective new members. In an encouraging sign, turnout far exceeded expectations. Ken reports that so far we have added around six new members. Thanks to all the current members who recruited friends. Also thanks to our Milwaukee Boat Show table volunteers. (A majority of attendees were people who filled out interest cards at the boat show.) And thanks to Ken and his Membership Committee volunteers for welcoming our guests and answering all their questions.

Incidentally, this event marked a milestone. Just days before, to gain a seniority edge on everyone who would be signing up at open house, a new member applied online and paid his deposit online, without having to fill out a paper form or write a check. Only recently have we enabled that. I think it could become very popular. If you have friends who are interested in joining, please tell them this new convenient option is available. Have a look for yourself here.

We have another open house event coming up at the end of the month. Let's make that one an even bigger success. I just want to remind everyone that our new website is still a work in progress. So please be patient as Publications Director Luke Radomski continues to field suggestions for improvements.

In closing, please remember that there will be a general membership meeting Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m. If you want to know what is happening, make sure you check your e-mails and the website calendar for all of the upcoming events which will be held in the month of March. See you at the club.
