Artka George 2014

In With the New

Here we are celebrating the end of 2014 and ringing in 2015. I hope that everyone had a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year's! If you attended the New Year's Eve celebration at the club, you may still not have fully recovered from having such a good time. I would like to thank all of our great staff and members for their dedication and hard work in making this a great event .The food was fantastic along with the refreshments and entertainment.

This past year we continued with the tradition of having fun at South Shore Yacht Club. The weather was sure a factor but we worked through it and were able to plan many events throughout the year. Financially our club is very sound. We had plenty of cash flow throughout the year mainly due to our members supporting the club and hosting special events. At the beginning of last year our membership was around 530 members. By the end of the year our membership had dropped to around 497 members.

It's obvious that we have to put more effort into member recruitment. Membership Chair and Vice Commodore Ken Dziubek has worked very hard toward that end. But you also need help from you, our rank-and-file members. If a quarter of our members could bring in a new member, we would be around the 600 members our by-laws allow. Getting more members on board is key to keeping SSYC affordable.

The water levels have gone up since the beginning of last year, and so at the end of the year, we were over two feet higher than the previous year. Recent forecasts from NOAA expect the water level to rise through this coming spring.

At the December membership meeting SSYC Financial Director Rick Schoos presented the budget for 2015. The budget did include some price increases in some areas of operation for the club. After presenting the budget there were no questions from the floor about the budget from the membership. I look forward to 2015. With the support of our entire membership and staff, we will have another successful year where we can enjoy an affordable and safe yacht club.
