Remember Me

graubner george 2014Our Annual Big Brothers/Big Sisters event, was held on August 23rd.   Doug Reading, who is Captain of this event, informed me that we have more than 100 kids that were signed up to participate.  While the weather was a bit iffy, it was good enough to give the kids an enjoyable time.  This is always important for the kids and equally important to all of us at SSYC. The kids always look forward to a day on the lake, and we are getting more kids signing up.  So we are always looking for boaters to participate and take kids out for a ride.  Upon the return to port, lunch is served and each child leaves with a small gift to remember the day.  It’s a worthwhile cause and touches all of our hearts to see the smiling faces and gratitude of the kids!  Consider participating in this event next year… Boaters and Non Boaters are Welcome!

The past Power Boater’s Thursdays have been well attended.  Margarita night, July 31st, was hosted by the Wagner’s and Berg’s.  This fun filled grill your own event featured various tasty Margarita’s.  The weather cooperated making it a gorgeous summer night on the lake!  The following week, August 7th, our Brown Bag event hosted by the Erv Blummer, Merryfield’s, and Grabowsk’s, was attended by over 50 members.  Thanks to the Captains of these events, your coordination is greatly appreciated.

Our New Event this year, sponsored by the Power Boater’s was a Cruise to Discovery World on July 16th, (a Wednesday) and it was great to see such a wonderful turnout!   Captained by Graubner’s & Arka’s, we had 9 boaters that took their boats and extended hospitality to our non boaters of the Club, while others drove over to Discovery World to meet up with us.   Tom Gale gave a shout out to our 60 attendees and acknowledged our cruise over.    He put a challenge to Milwaukee Yacht Club to board their vessels and participate!  Lots of great music, good food and even a number of sail boaters gave up their night on the lake to join in the fun.  I am looking at putting together a few additional cruises to Discovery World next year.  Or, if there is interest, we might explore a Cruise to Cathedral Square which are on Thursday nights.

The Power Boater’s first “Movie under the tent”, August, 21st,  was a special treat for our youngsters.  However, because of threatening thunder storms, we moved the movie into our upstairs dining area which was transformed into a theater for the evening!   The feature movie was “Frozen” and delighted not only the kids but adults as well.  This FREE event was certainly special with treats of popcorn, kettle corn, and ice cream with all of the toppings.  Amich’s kettle corn was really good!   This family event was hosted by the Artka’s, and Amich’s.  And, thanks to our soundman, Vince Verhasselt. They did an outstanding job, and the consensus was that we will do this again.  Thanks to all the parents and grandparents for your support in making this event a success.  We hope more will take advantage of it next time. Remember, the show goes on…Rain or Shine.   If you have any suggestions on future movie selections, let me know!

I’m in the planning stages for the SSYC Milwaukee Dingy River Cruise which we are planning for October.   I’m looking for some volunteers to assist in planning this event, so give me a call.  Additionally, the year wrap up ends with our Power Boaters Ball, which takes place on November 1st.  Make sure to put this one on your Radar.  It’s always an elegant dinner with dancing and the perfect way to jump start the holiday season ahead.

Once again, thanks to all that make Power Boater events such a huge success!  I’m starting to plan for next year, and want to hear from you if have any ideas for events.  Ideas are always welcome and we need your suggestions.   You don’t need to have a boat to float your ideas to me!   You may call me at 414-791-8439 or email me at .
