Mueller Cookie 2014The SSYC Junior Sailing Foundation will sponsor the annual Kaszube Cup Junior Sailing Regatta on July 7th – July 9th

The Kaszube Cup Regatta honors the original settlers of the Bay View community.  In 1872 commercial fishermen immigrated to Milwaukee from the Kaszuby Region of Poland.  They settled on Jones Island in Milwaukee and set up a fishing community.

Jones Island was not to be treated forever as a fishing village at the entrance to Milwaukee’s harbor.  Its location was ideal for industrial development.  Thus, in 1889 steel industries began a siege of the island.  This resulted in a court battle over control of the island.  In 1938 the city of Milwaukee purchased the island for a municipal harbor and sewage disposal plant.

When they were forced to leave their village, many of the Kashubes settled in the Bay View area.  They were instrumental in helping to build South Shore Yacht Club.   The Kaszube Cup Regatta honors these families and their unique heritage.

Organizing and running a successful Junior regatta is a lot of work.  That’s why we need the help of the SSYC membership.  Numerous members have already committed to help out with the regatta.  We need additional help in the following areas.

Safety Boats - Do you have an inflatable or a small powerboat that you would be willing to take out during the regatta as a safety boat?  Or, do you have a boat that a Junior Advisory Committee member could use as a safety boat?  The safety of the Junior racers is very important.  Please help us out.

Housing - Would you be able to house some Junior racers and their chaperones on your sailboat or powerboat during the regatta?  Housing will be needed on Monday, July 7th and Tuesday, July 8th.

Door Prizes - Do you or your company have any items that you would like to donate as door prizes for the regatta?  Our goal is to get enough door prizes so that every participant receives one.  Some suggestions include hats, t-shirts, sunglasses, flashlights, bags, crookies, hat clips, mugs, cups, water bottles, etc.

Cash Donations - Any money donated to the regatta will be used to help purchase food for the participants’ meals.  The Juniors are 501(c)3 Foundation.  Any money that you donate will be tax deductible as per the law.

Can you help the Juniors in any of theses areas?  If so, please contact Helen “Cookie” Mueller at 414-744-9585 or email at

You can learn more about the various racing fleets by clicking here.  And the racing schedule (for all fleets) is available here.

PowerboatOur power boaters are active fishermen.  An annual fishing contest is held in July.

In addition, our power boaters host a number of events, usually on Thursdays as well as many weekends.
