Gale Tom 2014Cold months, but hot parties starting with “Jack Frost”, held on Saturday February 8th. It was the Entertainment Committee’s first theme party of 2014. Thanks to the efforts of all of the entertainment committee members decorating and especially Vince Verhasselt’s music mix. It was a great winter break with good food, friends, conversations, music, and dancing. Thanks also to the staff for the delicious meal and great service. Look for one to two parties each month for 2014. Most are already listed on the Club Calendar.

Speaking of Winter Break, I’m writing this article from a condo in Winter Park Colorado. 28 of us, mostly SSYC members, made our third skiing trip out west traveling by “train”. Slippery roads, delayed flights, blizzards, and travel warnings, “No Problem” when you ride the rails. We boarded Amtrak at 11am on Saturday February 15th for the 1.5 hour ride to Union Station in Chicago, then caught the California Zepher for the 21 hour ride to Winter Park Colorado. Sound like a long ride? Not when you relax in the spacious reclining chairs, or watch a movie on your laptop in the Club Car, or have a delicious meal in the Dining Car. Lots of great conversations, and yes, there is some alcohol consumption. It’s a party from the moment you get on the train! Of course the point was to enjoy some great skiing, and Winter Park never disappoints. Located 68 miles straight west of Denver, Winter Park is the first ski resort you come to after climbing over the top of Rockies. The resort base is at 9,000 ft and the skiing is mostly in the 10,000 to 12,000 ft altitude range. Can you say “…shortness of breath?”

I’m bringing all of this up because we’ve found that there are a lot of skiers at SSYC and we had a waiting list for this year’s trip as more people learned about it. For the last three years the cost has been $800 for transportation, lodging, and lift tickets. We leave on a Saturday and return the following Saturday. Look for next year’s notice and let us know if you’d like to join us.

New this year at SSYC, “Fat Tuesday” party on March 15th. Yes, a Mardi Gras Party on TUESDAY, “Fat Tuesday”, the day before Ash Wednesday. Watch for the e-blast.

After that, the next entertainment party at SSYC is St. Patrick’s on Saturday March 15th. Corn Beef and Cabbage, Irish stew, and live music. It’s very trendy to “Go Green”.

The next Entertainment committee is Wednesday March 12 at 7pm. New members and new ideas are welcome.

Sailing and Racing

SailboatsIf you are interested in sailing, and more specifically racing, there are ample opportunities to join one of our racing fleets, or to crew on one of the boats in those fleets.  The women's fleet races on Mondays, small boats race on Tuesdays.  Big boats race on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  And the double handed fleet races on Fridays.

You can learn more about the various racing fleets by clicking here.  And the racing schedule (for all fleets) is available here.

PowerboatOur power boaters are active fishermen.  An annual fishing contest is held in July.

In addition, our power boaters host a number of events, usually on Thursdays as well as many weekends.

KaszubeCupSSYC offers sailing lessons and a year-round program for children ages 8 - 18.  We offer a six-week series of lessons in Opti's, 420's and Lasers.  Our juniors attend a number of regattas throughout the summer, and host one of thelargest regattas on Lake Michigan, the Kaszube Cup.
