Suppose you hold a great, fun event and none of your photos turn out? That’s my story and so I’ll try and describe this annual fun excursion up the Milwaukee River with a few words (maybe we can get some photos from others on the trip). Through most of the week the ‘weather guessers’ on the local station were predicting stormy weather for this Sunday but as often happens their forecasts were nearly 180 degrees off. We were blessed with a southwest breeze and warm (hot) temperatures. The ‘drift’ usual scheduled for August was moved to June because of the August heat, well Sunday’s high was 88. After registering at the Club around two dozen boats, mostly inflatables, manned by more than 60 fearless crew started the voyage to the mouth of the Milwaukee River and the fun journey to the picnic at the Milwaukee Rowing Club facility. A couple of casualties (engine issues) didn’t put a damper on the fun as our rescue pontoon boats saved the day. Along the route cards were picked up for the Poker Run and the crews had to keep a sharp eye out for answers to a pretty tough quiz. Two stops along the way for ‘adult beverages’, the usual Ale House and this year The Harp made us all feel very welcome. The cook-out was fantastic, again with Dave Tucholka PC heading up the volunteer grill team. After the prizes were awarded for the poker hand and quiz winners everyone headed back to SSYC at their own pace. As always it was a great time enjoyed by a diverse group of our members, plan on joining the fun next year.
