Three Levels Offered
Juniors Program sailing lessons are open to the youth of the entire local community ages 8 to 18.
Registration and more information is available at www.ssycjuniors.org
Classes run for eight weeks, this year starting June 13 and ending Aug. 12. While centered on sailing skills, the program is geared more broadly to building confidence, promoting teamwork and teaching lessons in good sportsmanship. Three levels are taught.
This track is for children with little or no sailing experience. Three-hour classes meet three times a week in the junior clubhouse and on the water. All students must pass a swim test and demonstrate a comfort level in and around the water. The course teaches sailing fundamentals, nautical terminology, knot tying, basic dinghy rigging and how to understand the nuances of wind speed and direction.
This track is for graduates of beginner training. Class meets three times a week for three hours. Students will sail in Optis and 420s beyond the breakwall. They must be very confident in their abilities and at home on the open waters.
Open only to students who have completed both the beginners and the intermediate class. Class meets twice a week for seven-hour sessions on and off the water. This track teaches detailed technique for championship competition
