South Shore Yacht Club

Juniors 2011

This summer was a summer of epic proportions. With the closing of the Milwaukee Yacht club junior sailing team we gained 4 new members. With the return of our intrepid coaching staff the season looked to be very promising. The SSYC Junior sailing team went far and wide to participate in over 5 regattas. Our very own team took consecutive 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishes in the 420 fleet of the Kazube Cup, and if I had just protested that one guy we could have gotten 4th, 5th, and 6th, but hey, sailing isn’t a basket of roses.

The travel team participated in the Sears Cup regatta all the way over in Lower Michigan. In this regatta we entered several lasers and an Interlake captained by the fearsome Megan McMahon and crewed by the steadfast Pieter “Jean” Vandenkieboom, and the ever courageous Brennan “Bronco” Reynolds. This dream team of sailors took 2nd place in the Interlake fleet and won the sportsmanship award.

At the end of the season several sailors traveled to the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago to participate in the skyline regatta, and for all you fallout gamers out there, the yacht club is just like RivetCity, like seriously the yacht club is a cruise ship. In Chicago the team encountered fearsome winds and dicey waters, but overcame these obstacles. The team of Kimmy Klammer and Megan McMahon partook in the 420 fleet and singlehandedly proved that you can plane in a 420 and control the boat, or well, get past the finish line and then turtle. I and Elizabeth Hayes finished in 8th place in the 420 fleet. . We also had an outstanding laser fleet of Pieter Vandenkieboom, Riley Liegel, Alex Comte and Derek “DJ” Debrauske, who dominated the fleet on several occasions.

After all the regattas and all the traveling, all roads lead back to good ol’ SSYC. At the end of the year our team does the Turkey Cup, a crazy race where the entire junior team crams 8 people into 420s which are only made for 2 or 3 people. In this race each team can do anything they want to finish the course, aside from pirating boats, because people could get injured if we did that. The winning team of this event was Brennan “Bronco” Reynolds and the Jackhammer Eskimos. Bronco was the senior junior of the fleet and it is a shame to see him go on to college, but the memories of him and his achievements won’t be forgotten.

In closing, the season was one to be remembered, even with injuries, the team overcame all obstacles.

Looking forward to next season guys, keep it real

Connor “Cougar” Reynolds
